How to Properly Explain Tattoo Aftercare to Clients
Aftercare is just as important as the tattoo procedure itself. Proper healing ensures the tattoo stays bright, sharp, and infection-free. Here’s a clear aftercare guide every tattoo artist should provide to their clients.
1. Why Clients Must Know Aftercare
Even the best tattoo can be ruined by improper aftercare. Make sure clients understand that 50% of the result depends on them.
2. What to Tell Right After the Session
- Cover the tattoo with a protective film (classic or dermal).
- Explain when to remove it: after 4–6 hours, or as advised (SecondSkin — up to 24 hours).
- Provide aftercare steps in writing or on a card.
3. First 3 Days of Care
- After removing the film, wash the tattoo with antibacterial soap.
- Pat dry with a paper towel (no rubbing).
- Apply a thin layer of healing cream (e.g. Bepanthen, Hustle Butter).
- Repeat this 2–3 times daily.
4. What NOT to Do
- No soaking (baths, saunas, pools).
- No sunbathing or tanning.
- No alcohol-based products or iodine.
- No scratching or peeling — this can damage the pigment.
5. Recommended Products
- Soap: Antibacterial, fragrance-free, pH-balanced.
- Cream: Bepanthen, Hustle Butter, Balm Tattoo, TattooMed, etc.
- Protection: SecondSkin, Fixopore, medical film.
6. When to Contact the Artist
If there’s excessive redness, swelling, pus, or signs of infection — advise the client to contact you or see a doctor.
7. Card Template for Clients
